Kazem Jalali, Iran's Ambassador to Russia, wrote in a note: It may be surprising to many how thick, multi-hundred-page books by Russian authors have dominated the shelves of foreign literature sections in Iranian bookstores for decades. It is enough to visit a café-bookstore on one of Iran's famous four-season days to see young people immersed in the mysterious world of "The Brothers Karamazov" or the sufferings of "Anna Karenina." They accompany Tolstoy's War and Peace with 500 story characters and sympathize with the ups and downs of the harrowing war and the lightning assault of Napoleon's army through the decline of an ambitious politician and his bloody retreat.
