As Typhoon Bavi approached Shanghai, a video was released showing the slow, controlled movement of the tuned mass damper installed in Shanghai Tower, China's tallest building. The thousand-ton system, installed at a height of 583 meters on the 632-meter tower, absorbs vibrations caused by severe winds through its controlled oscillation and maintains the structural stability of the building. This damper, weighing a thousand tons, is considered the heaviest of its kind in the world. The footage also shows rapid cloud formations and intensifying winds across Shanghai's skyscrapers as Typhoon Bavi approached. Tuned mass dampers are among the most important engineering technologies in supertall buildings, and by moving in the opposite direction of structural oscillations, they significantly reduce the intensity of vibrations caused by wind or earthquakes—a technology that plays an important role in enhancing the safety and comfort of residents in these massive structures.
