MP Pezeshkian: Countries facing sanctions or military attack should not bear environmental costs alone

Pezeshkian said that developing countries should be given access to the tools needed to protect forests, wetlands, species and genetic resources, calling that the real meaning of environmental justice. He said biodiversity funding should be more accessible, fairer and better matched to the real needs of developing countries, and that transfer of new technologies, capacity building, development of indigenous knowledge and involvement of local communities should be central to implementing convention commitments. He added that the international community must accept that countries under economic sanctions or facing military aggression should not alone pay the environmental costs of those sanctions or wars.
