Story summary
Rokna News Agency reported on Friday, July 10, that the historic Nouk Abad qanat in Mehrestan County, Sistan and Baluchestan Province, measuring 6,300 meters in length with 117 well shafts, faces the threat of destruction due to years of drought, structural deterioration, and collapses in sections of its course. This qanat is one of the region's ancient water supply sources and provides water to more than 40 hectares of agricultural land. The Nouk Abad qanat is part of the historic network of qanats in Sistan and Baluchestan that, over centuries, has facilitated the formation of villages and sustained agriculture in arid regions through the transfer of groundwater.
- These traditional structures, some of which date back hundreds of years, have faced extensive damage in recent years due to successive droughts, declining groundwater resources, natural deterioration, and tunnel collapses.
