Ceasefire in Lebanon and challenges ahead

Two days after negotiations between Iran and the United States in Switzerland concluded—where the issue of immediate and permanent ceasefire on all fronts, particularly in Lebanon, was raised—news sources reported that two Lebanese security and political delegations have resumed the fifth round of Lebanon-Israel negotiations in Washington. During four days of talks that concluded Friday, June 5th, the main focus of negotiations was examining mechanisms for Israeli withdrawal from occupied areas in southern Lebanon and the manner of Hezbollah's disarmament. According to news agencies, following a series of relatively difficult negotiations for the Lebanese side, an agreement consisting of 14 articles titled "Framework Agreement" was reached and signed by Lebanese, Israeli, and American parties, which specified the geographic scope and timeline for withdrawal. Among the proposals presented and emphasized in the fourth round of negotiations on June 2nd and 3rd, 2026, was the establishment of pilot zones in southern Lebanon, whereby the Lebanese army would assume control and security of these areas following Israeli withdrawal, and upon success would expand to other areas. In this round of negotiations, emphasis was placed on a trial withdrawal from two areas surrounding the Litani River, so that if the Lebanese army succeeds in controlling these areas, this process would continue.
