America’s aircraft carriers are recognized as the symbol and embodiment of U.S. military power, its grandeur and awe. We had to assume that we must either destroy, sink, or capture that aircraft carrier. We were the first to test an anti-ship ballistic missile, after several actions and failures we had suffered in earlier tests. Using a telemetry system, we observed the missile’s motion and the target’s tracking on a television screen. All the guys who had worked on it, dozens of people, were all standing, packed together, and staring at that television screen.
