A piece on greatness in life

Story summary

This is not merely a funeral procession; it is a scene in which mourning gradually takes on the form of epic. Epic does not always begin with cries of victory. Sometimes it begins with weeping faces; with people who have tears, yet do not retreat; who are bewildered, yet unbowed; there is loss in their gaze, but will is seen in their steps. They beat their chests, but this chest-beating is not merely a ritual of farewell; it is also the language of anger, loyalty, and the demand for justice.. This image is not simply a farewell to a body. It is as though the figure of meaning still stands, and the crowd has gathered not only to bid farewell, but to renew their covenant.. And in the end, before this scene, what can be said but: "Greatness in life and greatness in death is a right—this is one of the miracles." Greatness in life and greatness in death; yes, this itself is one of the miracles.. When life is lived with dignity and nourished by the blood of affection, it does not end in the dust. It returns among the people; in tears, in chest-beating, in anger, in covenant, in standing firm. Such a death is not the end of one person; it is the beginning of the movement of a meaning in the souls of people.

Greatness in Life, Greatness in Martyrdom
